Book Review: The Liars by Naomi Joy

“My rage was incandescent.”

― Naomi Joy, The Liars

An unsettling tale of competition and secrets that will have you turning the pages as it builds to a suspenseful finale. A fast-moving narrative that is skillfully written, with more turns than a rollercoaster.

Synopsis from Goodreads...

Two women. One deadly secret. A rivalry that could destroy them.

Ava Wells is perfect. She has the boyfriend, the career, the looks. But one night changes everything and her life suddenly isn't so seamless.

Jade Fernleigh is ambitious. She's worked hard to get where she is. And she's not about to let Ava take the job she rightly deserves.

Both women share a secret that could destroy them, but who will crumble first?

My reaction to this novel...

This book is just insane. Actually, at first I believed it to be just another uninteresting suspense book. Since I honestly don't know who the author is and this is my first time reading something by her, I don't have any expectations for it. But this novel absolutely astounded me since it held me engaged from beginning to end while taking me on a whirlwind of revelations, deceit, and power.

Ava and Jade are just a few of the characters whose perspectives are used to tell the narrative. Because of Jade's style of life and her wild banter, I felt so disgusted with her over the reading process that I can no longer stomach reading her points of view. Even if the twists are known, I still don't like her much till the very end; in fact, my opinion of her just becomes worse. I believe she should be the primary definition of insane since she is so creepy and bizarre. I find it very difficult to digest what Jade is doing or thinking. However, she occasionally makes ludicrous blunders that make me chuckle. She may not be my favorite person, but that doesn't mean I don't want her in the plot. Sincerely, I believe the tale will be uninteresting if she is not included in the story. This is why I believe the author's writing style and character creation are so powerful since she was successful in appealing to my emotions.

Anyway, I appreciate how the author messed with my thoughts. I like reading suspenseful books that keep me wondering till the very end, so I was looking for a book that would do the same for me. I also wanted to feel like the twist I'm anticipating in the story wasn't exactly what it was. Even though I guessed who the perpetrator was, it still caught me off guard in most scenarios, even after the reveal and until the very end. I absolutely enjoy how the tale flows; the novel's ability to spark my imagination helped my mind function to its fullest capacity.

I truly enjoy this book, and despite the fact that it will leave you hanging at the conclusion and cause you to feel a little sorry for some of the characters, it is still well worth reading. I really suggest this book to everyone who like thrillers. You'll definitely get a taste of what unrealistic expectations taste like from this book.
