My reaction to this novel...

I have always enjoyed reading historical fiction, and The White Queen by Philippa Gregory did not disappoint. From the very first few chapters, I found myself completely drawn into the story. It wasn't one of those books that took forever to become interesting. Right from the beginning, there was already mystery, romance, politics, and conflict that made me want to keep reading. Every chapter gave me another reason to turn the page, and before I knew it, I was already deeply invested in the lives of the characters.

The story follows Elizabeth Woodville, a young widow whose life changes after she meets King Edward IV. What starts as a love story quickly becomes much bigger than that. The novel takes readers into a world where power is everything, loyalty can change overnight, and every decision can affect the future of a kingdom. I loved how the story showed that being queen was not just about wearing beautiful dresses and crowns. It also meant carrying heavy responsibilities, making difficult choices, and living with the constant fear of losing everything.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was how alive the characters felt. They were not perfect, and that made them more believable. I really liked Elizabeth because she was brave, determined, and willing to fight for her family no matter what happened. She had many difficult moments, but she never easily gave up. Watching her face different challenges kept me interested throughout the entire book.

Of course, not every character was easy to like. There were several characters who honestly frustrated me. Some of their choices made me want to stop reading for a moment because I couldn't believe what they were doing. There were times when I found myself saying, "Why would you do that?" Philippa Gregory writes in a way that is easy to understand, even for readers who are not very familiar with English history. She mixes historical facts with fiction so naturally that the story feels alive rather than educational. I actually found myself becoming interested in learning more about the real people behind the novel after I finished reading it.

The writing itself is smooth and easy to follow. While there are many characters and political relationships, I never felt completely lost. The descriptions helped me picture the castles, royal courts, and beautiful settings without slowing the story down. Everything felt vivid but never too complicated.

What I also liked was how the novel explored themes of love, ambition, loyalty, family, and survival. Every character had something they wanted, and many of them were willing to risk everything to get it. The story reminds us that power often comes with a price, and sometimes even good people have to make painful decisions.

If I had one small complaint, it would be that a few characters made decisions that really annoyed me. There were moments when I wished they had acted differently. But at the same time, those moments made the story feel more realistic because real people also make mistakes and poor decisions. Without those frustrating moments, the novel probably would not have been as memorable.

Overall, I truly enjoyed reading The White Queen. It is a book that kept me entertained from beginning to end.
