Book Review: The Last Time They Met By Anita Shreve

The Last Time They Met explores the remarkable impact that a single word—or perhaps a single decision—can have across a lifetime.  Simultaneously, the book generates an almost intolerable mystery that can only be completely comprehended in the last pages, via the eyes of young Linda Fallon and the young man who loves her.

My reaction to this novel...

Shreve's book delves extensively into the complex nature of love, showing it to be a source of both great happiness and devastating sadness.  The main idea is that first love has the capacity to influence a person's life even after years of absence.  The novel explores the issue of loss, including the loss of dreams, chances, and the possibility of a new future, in addition to the actual sensation of death.  The protagonists struggle with deep remorse as they consider the "what ifs" and the effects of their previous choices.  These issues are explored in a subtle and thought-provoking way that makes the reader consider their own experiences with love, grief, and the decisions that shape their life.

Both Thomas Janes and Linda Fallon are fully realized characters who carry the burden of their pasts.  As a strong, self-reliant woman, Linda is plagued by memories of her passionate connection with Thomas.  As she faces the demons of her past and tries to make sense of the decisions she made, her path is one of self-discovery and reconciliation.  Thomas, meanwhile, is a more mysterious character who is troubled by remorse and loss.  He must confront his past and figure out how to move on from tragedy as part of his character growth.  Both characters' inner conflicts are expertly portrayed by Shreve, enabling the reader to identify with their complexity and weaknesses.

I find that the author's writing style is distinguished by its lyrical sentences, vivid descriptions, and meticulous attention to detail.  She expertly creates a strong feeling of place and atmosphere by utilizing sensory details and pictures.  Despite being confusing at first, the novel's non-linear narrative style ultimately strengthens the impact of the plot.  Shreve builds tension and intrigue by progressively exposing the complexity of Linda and Thomas's relationship through the weaving together of past and current timeframes.  By using this literary style, the reader may better comprehend the characters' motives and decisions by piecing together their common past.  Because of the careful pace, the reader is able to completely lose oneself in the story's emotional terrain.
